The Pascua Yaqui Tribe is a Native American tribe primarily located in southern Arizona, United States, with ancestral ties to the Yaqui people of northern Mexico. The tribe gained federal recognition in the US in 1978, after a long history of displacement and marginalization. Today, the Pascua Yaqui Tribe's reservation, established in 1964, encompasses over 2000 acres near Tucson, Arizona.
The Pascua Yaqui Tribe is deeply rooted in their cultural heritage, which includes traditional ceremonies, music, language, and arts. The Yaqui language, called Yoeme, is part of the Uto-Aztecan language family and still spoken by many tribal members. The tribe is well-known for their Deer Dance, a ceremony that combines elements of Yaqui and Catholic beliefs, reflecting their unique syncretic religious practices. The Pascua Yaqui Tribe continues to focus on community development, providing education, healthcare, and economic opportunities for its members while preserving their rich cultural traditions.
