Les premiers colliers amérindiens se composaient de perles roulées à la main enfilées ensemble et nouées autour du cou. La turquoise et la coquille étaient les matériaux les plus couramment utilisés dans les colliers. L'introduction de l'orfèvrerie et de la fabrication de perles a conduit à la création du collier Squash Blossom, le plus emblématique des colliers Navajo.
