Johnathan Nez was born in Winslow, Arizona in 1966 as the seventh child of seven.
His older brother, Leonard Nez, is an acclaimed jeweler. Leonard was a big influence in his life and helped him with the art of jewelry making. Leonard and Johnathan are the only two in their family making jewelry.
He went to boarding school in Dilkon, Arizona in Navajo County. He had a good experience there and felt like he learned so many life lessons and how to take care of himself.
In addition to guidance from Leonard, Johnathan was inspired by his father-in-law, Thomas Guerro and his wife’s cousin, Leonard Plato in his jewelry making.
Johnathan loves contemporary and clean lines, and this precision shows in his jewelry. He often uses gold with the silver. In 2007 he won second place at the prestigious Santa Fe Indian Market for his concho belt.
Johnathan comes from a family of ropers and loves the rodeo, but for now he is focused on his grandchildren. He and his wife are raising their five grandchildren, as the parents have sadly passed away. The granddaughters say he is the best grandpa and takes such good care of them. He is a wonderful and caring man with a positive and thankful attitude.
