Dean Sandoval Jr., a skilled Navajo silversmith, was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to parents who were traditional silversmiths. He grew up in Tohajilee (formerly known as Cañoncito) on the Navajo reservation, where he and his siblings learned the art of silversmithing from an early age. His mother, Alta Sandoval, and his sister, Bonnie Sandoval, continue to work as silversmiths.
Dean recalls that his first piece of jewelry was probably a pair of earrings, though he doesn't remember what happened to them due to the countless pieces he has created since. He is married and has three children, whom he raised in a traditional manner. The family speaks both Navajo and Apache, and his childen learned to read Navajo. He emphasized teaching his children silversmithing skills, starting with helping Dean with simpler tasks like setting bezels and buffing jewelry.
Initially, Dean began silversmithing to earn a living, following in his family's footsteps. Over time, he grew to love the craft, especially because it allowed him to stay home and watch his children grow. Before becoming a full-time silversmith, he worked various odd jobs, including framing. His talent and the appreciation people showed for his work motivated him to continue.
Dean's favorite projects are the larger pieces, as they offer more opportunities for creativity and unique designs. Though he loves the outdoors and once participated in rodeo events, he has since given up that pastime, joking that he's "getting too old" for it.
